Got a great comment and tip from Leo dC on the post Ride the Rails to the River - you can get a transfer from the Capitol Corridorr to the Sacto Light Rail taking your costs down a little bit:
“I’m a Rail Supe at SacRT and a frequent rail rider. Some things I wish to clarify and may make your riding better. The Capitol Corridor has a transfer agreement with several transit agencies, SacRT being one of them. Ask the conductor and he/she will give you an untimed transfer slip(almost like a daypass on Light Rail under POP, but has to be surrendered if riding the bus) so you don’t have to use the FVM. The new cars (CAF 2xx series) have bike hooks by the flip up seats, while the Siemens you have to hold your bike. Bike capacity ranges from 2 on single cars to 14 on 4 car trains. All bikes must board the end doors and stowed on the end seats, except the very front one which are reserved for people with disabilities or seniors. No time restrictions and must use the stairs. No bikes allowed to go up the ramp and must not block aisle and doorways. Folsom service ends at 628p from downtown and 700p from Folsom but the rest of the system goes to 12a depending on location. Another good trail is up the Old Sac Northern Route behind Blue Diamond. Happy biking and thanks for riding RT.” Thanks Leo!
You can find the route of the Northern Bike Trail at the Rails to Trails website.

I love that when you register on Rails To Trails you can click to make this pledge:
Take the Pledge: I pledge to Burn Calories, Not Carbon! ™ by walking and biking more and driving less. And I add my name to the growing list of people calling on their political leaders for more active transportation choices in their communities.
Yes please - more active transportation choices!
Maybe this resurgence in interest in trains (Congressman Jim Oberstar asking for more funding for Amtrak) will mean I can take my bike on Amtrak to Truckee and ride to Lake Tahoe someday soon! Since bikes are treated as baggage on Amtrak, meaning you have to box your bike, and Truckee is not a baggage stop last I checked (grrrr…), it’s a no go right now.
The message from Amtrak: Just go get a car and drive to Tahoe.
